Smart switches and some motors connect to your mains wiring. Please read this before you install.
Use a qualified electrician
We recommend that a qualified electrician fits any product that connects to mains wiring. In England and Wales, some electrical work in homes must meet Part P of the Building Regulations. Always turn off the power at the consumer unit before removing a switch.
Check before you buy
- Neutral wire: most smart switches need a neutral at the switch. If you don't have one, see our no neutral switches.
- Back box size and depth: only UK Size (86mm) switches fit UK boxes, and a 35mm deep box is recommended. See the back box size guide.
- Load: check the maximum load per gang on the product page, and never exceed it.
- Dimmers: use only dimmable bulbs that match the dimmer type stated on the product page.
- Hub: Zigbee products need a Zigbee hub. See the buying guide.
No-wiring options
Battery curtain robots, rechargeable blind motors, wireless scene switches and sensors don't need any mains wiring. Follow the fitting instructions in the manual.
Bathrooms and wet areas
Mains switches must follow the bathroom zone rules in BS 7671. Ask your electrician where a switch can be fitted.
